Which Schengen country should Indians apply to?
Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or where the main purpose of your trip is. If you spend equal time in several countries, apply to the country you will enter first. Picking an 'easy' consulate for a trip mainly elsewhere is a common refusal reason.
The main destination rule
Article 5 of the EU Visa Code sets out which consulate is responsible:
- One country: apply to that country.
- Several countries: apply to the country that is your main destination, meaning where you spend the longest time or where the main purpose of the trip is.
- No main destination (equal time everywhere): apply to the country of your first entry into the Schengen area.
Worked examples
| Trip | Apply to |
|---|---|
| 5 nights Paris, 3 nights Amsterdam | France |
| 4 nights Rome, 4 nights Zurich, entering via Rome | Italy (equal stay, first entry) |
| 2 nights Frankfurt (landing) then 6 nights Swiss Alps | Switzerland |
| Business conference in Berlin, then 3 days leisure in Prague | Germany (main purpose) |
| Wedding in Barcelona, 3 nights; Lisbon 4 nights | Usually Spain if the wedding is the main purpose; explain clearly in your cover letter |
Why "easy consulate" advice is risky
Many sites rank Schengen countries by refusal rate and suggest applying to the "easiest". If your bookings show most nights elsewhere, the consulate can refuse because the purpose and conditions of stay are not justified. Even if you get the visa, border officers can question you if your trip clearly does not match.
The right approach is to plan the trip you actually want, and apply to the country the rules point to.
Can you change plans after getting the visa?
Real plans change. If you have to change them for a genuine reason, keep evidence of why. A pattern of applying to one country and travelling mainly to another can hurt future applications.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the easiest Schengen country for Indians?
There is no safe 'easiest' country. You must apply to your main destination. Refusal rates differ by consulate, but choosing a consulate that does not match your trip is itself a refusal reason.
If my stay is equal in two countries, where do I apply?
In the country where you first enter the Schengen area.
