Schengen visa refused? The reasons, explained for Indians
Schengen refusals use a standard form with ticked reasons. For Indian applicants the most common are an unjustified purpose (often unverifiable bookings), insufficient funds, and doubts about your intention to return. Each one has specific document fixes.
The scale of the problem
In 2024, 1,65,266[source] Indian Schengen applications were refused, about about 15%[source] of all applications. France alone refused 31,314[source]. Indians lost an estimated ₹136 crore[source] in fees.
Reading the refusal form
The refusal form lists standard grounds with tick boxes. Here is what the common ones usually mean in practice.
"Justification for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay was not provided"
The consulate did not believe your trip plan. Typical causes:
- Flight or hotel bookings that could not be verified or were cancelled
- An itinerary that does not match your bookings
- Applying to a country that is not your main destination
- A vague cover letter
Fix: genuine, verifiable reservations; one consistent itinerary; the correct consulate.
"You have not provided proof of sufficient means of subsistence"
- Low balance compared with trip cost
- Large deposits shortly before applying
- Statements that do not show income matching your ITR or payslips
Fix: stable statements over several months, documents for any large credit, and a realistic trip budget.
"Your intention to leave the territory before the expiry of the visa could not be ascertained"
- Weak ties to India: job, family, property, business
- Long trip compared with your leave
- Limited travel history
Fix: a leave letter with return date, evidence of family and property ties, and a trip length that fits.
"The information submitted regarding the justification for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay was not reliable"
Something in the file looked inconsistent or untrue. This is serious. Check every date, name and figure across all documents.
"You have not provided proof of holding adequate and valid travel medical insurance"
Insurance with less than €30,000[source] cover, wrong dates, or not valid across all Schengen states.
Appeal or reapply?
Every Schengen country must offer an appeal, but the procedure, language and deadline differ and are written on your refusal letter. Appeals can take weeks or months. If your trip date is close, a fresh application that fixes every ticked reason is often faster. A refusal must be declared in future applications.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply to another Schengen country after a refusal?
Only if that country is genuinely your main destination for the new trip. Applying elsewhere just to avoid the refusing consulate is consulate shopping and often leads to another refusal.
How long does a Schengen visa appeal take?
It depends on the country. Some take a few weeks, others several months. The refusal letter tells you where and by when to appeal.
