US B1/B2 visa interview questions and how to answer them
Most B1/B2 interviews in India last two to three minutes and cover four things: why you are travelling, who you are, how you will pay, and why you will come back. Answer in one or two honest sentences that match your DS-160, and do not memorise scripts.
How the interview works
You stand at a window. The officer has your DS-160 and your previous applications on screen. They ask a few questions, sometimes in Hindi or another Indian language if you prefer. Then they either approve, refuse under 214(b), or give you a 221(g) slip asking for more documents or administrative processing.
Officers are trained to judge consistency and credibility quickly. Short, specific, truthful answers work best.
Purpose of the trip
| Question | What they are checking | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Why are you going to the US? | Is the purpose real and allowed on a B1/B2? | "To attend my daughter's graduation in Boston on 18 May, then two weeks in New York and Washington." |
| How long will you stay? | Does the length fit the purpose and your job? | "Three weeks. I have leave until 6 June." |
| Where will you stay? | Is there a concrete plan? | "With my daughter in Boston, then hotels I have booked." |
| Have you made an itinerary? | Is this a planned trip? | Name the cities and rough dates without reading. |
Who you are
| Question | What they are checking |
|---|---|
| What do you do? | Job stability and whether your income fits the trip |
| How long have you worked there? | Stability |
| How much do you earn? | Consistency with DS-160 and the cost of the trip |
| Are you married? Do you have children? | Family ties in India |
Know your exact salary, designation and joining date as written on your DS-160.
Money
- Who is paying for the trip? If someone else pays, explain who and why, briefly.
- How much will the trip cost? Have a realistic number in mind.
Ties and return
- Have you travelled abroad before? Mention countries and that you returned on time.
- Do you have relatives in the US? Always answer truthfully. Hiding relatives who appear in records is far worse than having them.
- Why will you come back? Job, business, family, studies, property. One clear sentence.
Mistakes that hurt
- Reciting a memorised script, especially one copied from the internet
- Giving answers that differ from the DS-160
- Over-explaining and volunteering documents nobody asked for
- Saying "just tourism" with no plan
- Guessing salary or dates

Frequently asked questions
Can I answer US visa interview questions in Hindi?
Yes. US posts in India commonly offer interviews in Hindi and some regional languages. Ask the officer, or choose the language when asked.
What happens if I get a 221(g) slip?
A 221(g) means your case needs more documents or administrative processing. Follow the instructions on the slip. It is not a refusal under 214(b), but it can add weeks or months.
How long is a US visa interview in India?
Usually two to three minutes. Some last longer if the officer has follow-up questions.
